Writer's Block: Goal!

Goooooooooaaaaaaaaalllllll! Today marks the anniversary of football (soccer) star Pele's 1000th goal. Why has professional footie never caught on in the United States?
Let me do an analogy for you:

American Football is the most popular sport in America.
Football is the most popular sport in the world.

In Football, you can expect a good three goals a game.
In American Football, you can expect four or five touchdowns, the equivalent of goals. Same difference, essentially.

But in Football, goals count for one. In American Football, they count for six, plus an extra point, two for running it in again, and three points for kicking a field goal (above the goalposts, ironically).

That's why, I think. Americans bitch that Football doesn't have enough scoring. Bullshit. They're just too stupid to see past the fact that the goals only count once.

It's not really an accurate analogy. In American football, the ball slowly makes its way across the field, with defense and offense clearly defined, and considerable attention is payed to the over-arcing strategy of either team in any given situation. Scoring is limited because it takes a lot of time and effort to get the stupid pigskin across the field.

In soccer, the ball goes back and forth the entire game (similar to basketball) but for all the running and kicking and screaming you only get a handful of goals every game. Offense and defense are hard to follow in the shuffle, and it becomes a matter of back-and-forth for some two to three hours. In addition, more attention tends to be payed to the skill of the players than how the team plays. "This team won because so-and-so kicks better."

Errr..A standard footy match lasts 90 minutes. 0_o

Errr...No. That happens more in basketball where there is a more limited number of players.

A footy player actually averages only a few minutes with the ball in 90 minutes of gameplay. Passing the ball and speed are the cornerstones of modern football.
