Holy SHIT, can I write a lot...

I just got an email from Arf linking me here, mentioning that you bade him do it. Thus, I assume you wouldn't mind if I added my 2 cents in...

All in all, good article. I agree with your points on Castlevania; while I personally like the newer ones (to the point where I think DoS' Julius Mode is the funnest 'old school' 'vania), the older ones, though slower paced, are still some of the best on the NES. That said, I would point out an omission. You mention that the original CV's storyline took off of Bram Stoker's Dracula (the credits facetious claim the "screenplay" was written by "Vram Stoker"), they didn't really tie the plot in to Mr. Stoker's novel until Bloodlines for the Genesis. The first CV owes a lot more to old monster movies, actually. The "cast" claims Dracula was played by "Christopher Bee" (an obvious takeoff of one of the guys who played Dracula), Death was Belo Lugosi (another one of Drac's most famous portrayers in the old days), Frankenstein was Boris Karloffice (Boris Karloff), Mummy was Lon Cheney, etc. etc. etc. That's a neat little tidbit I'd add if I were you.

Personally, I'd be harder on CV2, if only for the fact that its bad translation and dialogue make the game much more of a hassle without a walkthrough. It certainly did set the stage for the "Metroidvanias" (and as a hint, I'd advise making note of Koji Igarashi's self-admitted debt to Super Metroid once you get to SoTN), but unlike most of the non-linear Vanias, it can be exceedingly difficult to figure out where to go without a FAQ. For instance, to get to one mansion, you had to kneel in a specific place with a specific item, which could be pretty hard to figure out from just what the retarded townspeople tell you. That's just personal opinion, though, take it as you will.

Also, I'm not so sure that Simon's death is canon. Neither Leon nor Juste die in any of the endings to their respective games, but so far, they've only appeared in one game each, unless you count their cameo appearances in PoR (spoilers, ask and screen my comment if you'd like to know what I'm talking about). Also, Juste mentions how Simon was his grandfather near the beginning of HoD. That doesn't mean Simon couldn't have fathered Juste's father in the years between CV and CV2, but I'm jus' sayin.

Heartily agreed on CV3--I'd almost say I prefer to Rondo, since none of the additional characters broke the game as much as Maria did (and still does, in PoR :( ). One thing I'd consider are cosmetic changes between the American and Japanese versions, most importantly how the Japanese version had a superior sound chip. You can see a description of them here:

Wikipedia mentions the differences clearly:

The original Japanese version contained a specialized music chip which was removed in the North American release. This chip added two extra pulse-wave channels and a saw-wave channel to the system's initial set of five channels. The majority of the music combines the channels to imitate the sound of a synthesized string section. See: Multi-Memory Controller.
The Japanese version had slightly better graphics than the North American version. The backgrounds in many stages had special effects not seen in the American release.

Actually, your input is GREATLY appreciated.

One thing, though: I did go into the cosmetic and sound differences between the US and Japanese versions, as a matter of fact, I uploaded two recorded .wav files to point out the differences.

There's one thing that annoys me about Rondo, and it's going to be a topic of discussion when I get to it (in the "Elites" section): the graphics. Or more specifically, how the characters all look like they came straight out of Disagea. Was there some anime obsession that I didn't know about back then?

I did notice that those characters were very similar to their portrayals by those actors, but omited that information in an attempt to keep it readable.

But thanks for the feedback, it's greatly appreciated.

Ah, I see. Yeah, I got the wavs. Good move.

Pertaining to Rondo: I think there are a couple of reasons. First off, I they they wanted (for a Castlevania first, as far as I know) an animated intro to their game, and if you want an action-packed opening animation, anime is the way to go. Just look at DoS and PoR's intro; the anime style is pretty effective in making action-packed scenes quickly. Rondo's obviously wasn't as good as theirs, since it wasn't fully animated, but it certainly blows away Dracula X's.

*shrugs* well, your call, although if you plan to include a trivia section, you could add the author info there.

The way you number the parts at the beginning of the article is inconsitant. You use colons for some and dashes for others.
