M.A.N. will kill me for this.

You've got to be kidding me.

Sega of Europe has sent a cease-and-desist to YTMND about their Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. They want all the Sonic sites - everyone here has likely seen them all - removed. They think customers will get confused, thinking it's really Sega giving advice on how to rape people. I'm serious, check out the letter! They want them to not only take down the site they link, and any other Sonic sites and anything that mentions Sonic, they want control of the site (which is impossible, as that particular site is user uploaded), any profits that may or may not have come from said site (what profits? The few bucks someone might have made off of popups?)... it's unbelievable.

So they're worried about YTMND? They're worried about a few obviously edited sites made by teenagers, instead of the tonnes of furry porn that's available on 4chan? Are they going to send a cease and desist to the owners of THAT domain? I'd like to see that. This shows just how out of touch some people are about the internet; hell, it's patently obvious what the Sonic YTMNDs - which almost always, from my recollection, focus on the animated series from the mid-90s - are; user edited humour. VGCats has Sonic jokes, Penny Arcade has a line that I've quoted before ("Sega Makes Murder Porn"), you name it. Why YTMND?

This is a public relations disaster for Sega, because of the fanaticism of the memberbase at YTMND. Someone's made a response that I think sums it up: Sega's priorities are fucked.

Let's look at this, shall we?

- Sega's "Pedigree": Other than Football Manager - which was a successful franchise before it was bought, thank you - Sega hasn't done much right lately. Phantasy Star Universe is OK, but short of that, they've just about ruined Shining Force, their War series isn't looking very good, and everything they're doing is relying on past successes. C'mon, Alien Syndrome? OutRun? And that brings me to their biggest name of all...

- The Sonic Franchise: This is probably the biggest crime of all, what Sega has done to Sonic. Sonic is their biggest name because they're running out of names! They have done nothing but hurt the Sonic name for the past few years, pimping his classic games on every system that would have him like a cheap prostitute, and significantly fucking up every new game they've made for him. Sonic Rush sucks. Shadow the Hedgehog is a 101 class in how to fuck up a video game in every phase (you know it's true, Mel), and Sonic the Hedgehog for 360 and PS3 is WORSE. They can't even get the original right! In between throwing him on Gametap and the Genesis Collection and everywhere else, they couldn't even get the remake for Sonic right on the GBA, I think it scored like a 2.something on Gamespot!

They've ruined the name that they're trying to protect, and with them trying to take down a site solely because of user created content, and blaming it on the fact that their consumers might be dumb enough to think "oh my, is Sonic telling us how to rape someone? Is this the kind of company Sega is!?", shows how fucked this company is. This isn't what we had in mind when they killed off the Dreamcast to concentrate on making games. As a matter of fact, ever since Sammy bought the company out, the whole Sega name has been sufficiently fucked.

...I predict ytmnd users spiting sega by making fun of the letter. Buuuut that has a 100% chance of happening. xD

Man, Sonic for the 360 seemed so rediculous. There was a low chance of it being a good game to begin with. >

The response is the best thing I've seen all week. XD

I don't really have much to say aside from LOL WHAT, though.

That YTMND is fucking brilliant.

Other than that, I've got nothing.

Reminds me of how YouTube got blocked in Brazil for a few days.

(on a completely unrelated note, can you do me a favor? I'm installing a wiki extension for that second one, and it requires updating the mysql database with this line:

mysql -u[put your username here] -p [put your database name here] < hidden.sql

with....the username and database name filled out, but hell if I remember what those are. >_>)

It's this:

mysql -u[neonclover] -p [heritagecam.thracia.superbusnet.com] < hidden.sql

Okay, but um. Is it even possible for me to update the database, or would you need to do it for me? D:

Hey now, don't forget Medieval II:Total War. Sega own that too. And I heard the new outron is actaully a pretty good game.

Other than that.......Sega should just sell all its stocks and become a second party devolper or something. :/

I know I'm being a tool for this, but...

Second party development means that you personally make games for a console that you play. Even if they sold their name and company to someone like Sony or MS, they'd still be a third-party developer.

Just saying.

Sega does have precedent, as the Penny Arcade/Strawberry Shortcake incident proved, to do such a thing, so it's not surprising they would do so. And as to why they don't go after hentai artists, well, which is easier: going after one site and asking them to pull animated .gif files about Sonic rapery, or hunting down every last artist who draws yiff scenes between Sonic and Tails? Even if they shut down 4chan and Deviant Art, that won't solve the problem; hell, it probably won't even slow the artists down.

And while I'm hardly a Sega fan at this point, I can't say that they're completely without merit as a company. If we're talking purely good/great titles, Yakuza, Condemned, and Chromehounds were solid, and Virtua Fighter 5, Armored Core 4, and Virtua Tennis 3 look to keep that trend going. They have a better track record than a lot of their contemporaries at this point (Namco?), and really, they're one Nights 2 or Rez 2 or Jet Set Radio 3 or Panzer Dragoon 5 or whatever away from swaying hardcore opinions back in their favor.

Besides, dude, it's Sonic giving advice on how to rape people. This is not the same thing as Nintendo trying to sue a Suicide Girls member for saying he liked Metroid, okay? SONIC IS GIVING ADVICE ON HOW TO RAPE. There's no real way to justify this.

I cannot refute any of your points, 'Bus. This Sega is not the Sega that brought me joy in my youth. -_- You are correct to note that the merger seems to have killed the company. ... Funny how that seems to be the thing about mergers. Square Enix has produced a ton of garbage, too.

Hey, even I know Sega isn't what it used to be. I can say that about all the franchises I knew from when I was a kid (I still say Shadow is a fun game, though the series' entire feel has been different since the transition to 3D). Sega's little stunt here is total WTFness (though so is the fandom). Then again, I've never really liked many companies. In the end, they're all the same.
