Here's a tally - as of now, via CNN - of all of the ballot measures that aim at limiting the rights of gay couples, with a few other key ballot initiatives thrown in, mostly aimed at women's rights:

ARIZONA: PROPOSITION 102: BANNING GAY MARRIAGE - 57-47, yes, 85% reported
ARKANSAS: INITIATIVE 1: BANNING GAY COUPLES FROM ADOPTING - 57-43, yes, 73% reported
CALIFORNIA: PROPOSITION 8: BANNING GAY MARRIAGE - 54-46, yes, 22% reported
COLORADO: AMENDMENT 48: DEFINING THE BEGINNING OF LIFE AT CONCEPTION - 74-26, no, 51% reported (yes!)
FLORIDA: AMENDMENT 2: BANNING GAY MARRIAGE - 62-38, yes, 95% reported (60% necessary)
MICHIGAN: PROPOSITION 1: ALLOWING MEDICINAL MARIJUANA - 63-37, yes, 74% reported
MICHIGAN: PROPOSITION 2: ALLOWING STEM-CELL RESEARCH - 52-48, yes, 74% reported (Go Michigan!)
SOUTH DAKOTA: INITIATIVE 11: LIMITING ABORTION TO ONLY WHEN WOMAN'S LIFE IS IN DANGER - 55-45, no, 92% reported (YES!)
WASHINGTON: INITIATIVE 1000: ALLOWING ASSISTED SUICIDE: 58-42, yes, 43% reported

All in all... some good things, but every single initiative aimed at hurting homosexuals is going to pass.

I find it funny that on a day we elected a black President, we're still very obviously biased against homosexuals. We still want to criminalize them, and we're using fear and hatred to do it. What bothers me is that this is a fight against organized religion. Organized religion enjoys tax-free status, yet actively campaigns, usually very aggressively, for their own agenda, and as stated by Barry Goldwater, these people are, in their minds, speaking for God, so they cannot and will not be flexible or reasonable; they're lost. They're nuts.

Yes, we've come far tonight. But we're not there yet. Not yet. And from the looks of things, not for awhile.

EDIT: EVERYONE! OUT OF MY POOL! The dispute between Paul and I is between Paul and I. Stay out of it, because though I'm annoyed, I still respect the man greatly.

I know that the President can't actually do a lot of things on his own, but he has influence. I seriously, seriously hope that Obama uses some of his influence to promote tolerance and maybe get some of these things overturned...

The gay rights results disappoint me terribly, but I'm very happy to see the results of the various abortion measures. As a woman, this right means quite a lot to me and is one of the biggest reasons that I absolutely could not have voted McCain (and Palin). Even though I hope to never have to have one myself, I never want that right to be taken away.

I only hope that the gay marriage/adoption propositions and amendments are somehow overturned.

Thank you for preaching to your choir. They are certainly the ones you should be targetting with all of this energy of yours.

My entries are public. Anyone can read them.

And yes, I think the persecution of homosexuality has to go away. What's wrong with that?

If anything, I think this tempers the emotion of the night. And it should.

The only two conservatives who actually READ you as far as I can tell are myself and Dale, and this is the third fucking entry I have read of yours today making me feel bad by association, with the rest of your reader base agreeing with you 100%. Having read this rant more than once, and having had to put up with this american election for two years, I am somewhat sick of hearing about this.

I am not going to apologise for being sick to death about feeling this way either. The drama that temporarily taking you off my flist would create for however temporary a reprieve from this bullshit is not worth it, but neither is having to put up with it for what may be days when I am honestly not in the best mental shape from my job.

Hi Will.

Things like this make me glad you're Canadian. :)

Not to butt in, but. What I usually do to solve this is I take someone temporarily off of my reading list -- I've got a filter set up that usually includes everyone (it takes a little custom CSS to set it up so that it replaces the default friends' page link, but in the end, it's worth it to have that freedom/peace of mind), but when I find something really unsettling, I'll take someone off of that filter until I'm fairly sure they'll be "over it" -- usually, a couple of days.

That way, no drama and no stress.

It's a journey. It's always a journey.

There's a lot that we still have to overcome, but tonight we've done something that not that long ago was unthinkable. Voter turnout was amazing, and I've never felt this much hope from the people around me when I watched an election. We can't ride that wave all the way in, we have to keep working at it, but we're moving in the right direction, and that's more than we had in 2004.

I hope this doesn't sound totally lame; my rhetoric probably isn't the best when I've got good champagne in me.

Yeesh. Well, echoing Steve's statements, I'm sure California's supreme court will overturn Prop 8.

Right?

*facepalm*

Only America can shake the hand of the world while simultaneously kicking itself in the ass, I swear. I'm disappointed that homosexual marriage has been shitcanned so readily. -_-

Blessed will be the day when Darwinian law finally catches up to the ignorant and flushes them from my planet.

The Full Faith and Credit Clause in the Constitution kinda makes all these initiatives irrelevant. If a gay couple gets married in Massachusetts and moves to California, then California would have to recognize that marriage as legal. So even if a gay couple can't get married in Cali, they can still live in Cali with all the rights afforded by marriage.
