Bus downloaded Bioshock demo.

It came with Securom without his knowledge. :P

I downloaded the Bioshock demo off of Steam because hey, it's a Demo, why should it have DRM? I wanted to see if my new system could handle it.

Sure enough, the fucking thing had SecuROM's DRM, which is - literally - a rootkit. It installs without your consent, without your permission, is mentioned nowhere in any EULA, and once it's installed, stays on your computer even after the game is uninstalled. In the meantime, it gives antivirus programmes problems, is mentioned as a rootkit by some software, disables certain CD emulating programmes (like Daemon Tools or AnyDVD), and cannot be deleted or uninstalled by conventional methods; I've literally got to go into Safe Mode to delete all of the registry keys, and hope I get the right ones, or it will repropagate... you know, like a virus.

It also opens a serious hole in my security, as it calls home every day with statistics like malware.

I'm furious. I installed the demo because there's nothing to protect; it's a FREE DEMO. This proves that protection isn't the reason people use this software; it's to control more than just the game. They want to know when I play the game, how long, etc.

I'm going to be driven out of the PC gaming market at this rate. I've got a nice, spiffy new PC that can play all sorts of new games, and I've turned down at least three reviews - including Far Cry 2 - because the games have SecuROM.

That has got to be illegal.

Ugh...that's just dirty...

Well, there's another reason for me to stick to consoles even if I did have a system that could run most modern PC games. *sigh*

Come on, technologically inclined pirate people, you guys have always been good at circumventing DRM...find a way to obliterate SecuROM! Even better, companies, stop using the accursed thing!

Here's the thing:

We HAVE obliterated DRM. Ask Margaret to go through some of the things her Sims communities do to get around it. The DRM part of the equation is useless.

I still think, as I said on FESS, that the reason companies stick with SecuROM is because they want control. They want those usage stats from the sheep; how long, how often, when, etc. They can set up specific advertising (remember, most of these companies have lucrative in-game advertising deals, and since internet connectivity is required to authenticate, authentication brings in the newest ad images, too) around that.

Esau also brings up a good point: they want to end the used games market as we know it. Judging from what I saw with Live and FIFA, I fully fucking believe it. It's already to the point where the person that buys my traded-in NBA Live can't use full functionality (the Live Roster code is used), meaning he has to spend $10 to buy a new code if he wants that... congrats, guy, you've now spent $5 more than you would have for a new game (used copy is $55).

SecuROM is not about preventing piracy. It's about milking the consumer. And that's why I believe in boycotting the games no matter what; notice, I never bought Bioshock, even for the 360. And I won't be buying Red Alert 3.

Because you touch yourself at night. :'(

...to be serious, though: that is fantastically, bullshittingly stupid.

Filthy. One more reason to be a console gamer first and foremost.

I wonder if waving this whole problem in EA's face would be a good idea. Just to see an official response to how this shit is A, necessary, and B, legal.

Bioshock wasn't EA. It was Take Two.
