Writer's Block: Crepuscular Drama

The Twilight movie comes out today. A lot of people are really excited about seeing Bella and Edward on the big screen. Others couldn't care less. Where do you fall on the issue?
I fall under "what the fuck is Twilight? Is that the new Harry Potter?

Whatever gets kids reading, I guess.

There are two guys (a vampire and a werewolf) who fight over the main girl a lot. And then the werewolf ends up getting a thing for her daughter with the vampire, apparently.

I DON'T THINK WE EVEN NEED TO START ON HOW SQUICKY THAT IS.

There's this "imprinting" bullshit where werewolves can tell their ~*~soulmates~*~ at first glance or something, and I guess (read: HOPE) he waits for her to grow up or something.

idk, everything I know about these books is secondhand and has basically been enough to convince me to stay far, far away.

It has vampires that sparkle.

And one of the most atrocious writing styles ever.

Normally I'd say whatever gets kids reading but...

I can't comfortably say that about anything that has all these young girls convinced that Bella and Edward's relationship is the EPITOME of romance. When Edward is quite the stalker and the relationship is by times downright emotionally abusive. Not to mention the whole getting married and having a baby right out of high school part.

Now, there's nothing wrong with books about fucked up relationships. They can be quite interesting. The problem is this is portrayed as not only healthy but IDEAL. And this series is ALL THE RAGE among teenage girls.

Also, the author is fucking NUTS.

I'd rather children be illiterate than read this dog shit.

You want vampires? Here, I'll buy you Stoker's Dracula. I'll buy you Salem's Lot. THOSE have vampires done right.

Don't forget Forever Knight. Though that's less a book, and more an awesome... or at least fairly decent canadian show.

I only ever caught one or two episodes of it, so my opinion is sadly lacking.

There's also Le Fanu's Carmilla, which inspired Dracula. Though that's more a short story.

It's a piece of shit, 'Bus. I have no idea why it sells. I've seen cheap shoujo manga with better writing.
