I should have more time to make posts like this over time.

Random thoughts on games I've been going through:

* Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia - Wow. I don't know what happened, or what caused it... but either this game is exceptionally hard, or I just suck at Castlevania games all or a sudden.

How? How is anyone beating this game? Cheats? Guides? How did Alex beat this game as quickly as he did? Does all the blood he sucks, and all the Superkicks he gives, do they give him incredible, superhuman gaming skills? I'm getting dusted by the third boss! Consistently! And it doesn't help that the game makes you look at your player's corpse for about five seconds before going "OK, fine, here's your Game Over scene".

As a game, it looks to have a nice setup that seems to simplify the backtracking that is typically necessary in a Castlevania game. That's good at least. And the controls are tight, though there seems to be a lot - and I mean a lot - of cheap hits in certain places; there's no kickback, so if you get hit by something slow moving, you're going to get hit three or four times.

Overall, it's a great Castlevania game - better than Portrait of Ruin, and a lot better than Dawn of Souls - but I don't know if I'm going to rate it as highly as SOTN or Circle of the Moon.

* NBA 2K9 - My love affair with this game is getting scary. I've not played NHL much. I've not played Fable yet, and I own it. And while the reason I haven't played Left 4 Dead is because someone's jabbering me on AIM every .4 seconds and they HAVE to talk to me about SOMETHING ridiculous (hopefully, that lets up as the fever about FESS dies down), I haven't had a chance to really dig into Left 4 Dead, or even Football Manage-- Sorry, WORLDWIDE SOCCER MANAGER '09.

Either way, NBA 2K9 was a game I called the greatest basketball game ever in my review of it, and that's beared out, as I'm absolutely in love with how deep the game is, and the control scheme (subtly different from '08, but the changes are bigger than they appear). That said, I've found a nemesis for my Super Knicks team: the Cleveland Cavaliers. I hate the Cavaliers. They have the things I hate in games like this: a super player (Lebron James), a rebounding force (Zydrunis Illgauskis, which is bad because I play a running style), and a few shooters that can hit shots behind the arc (Wally Sczerbiak, Mo Williams). I hate the Cavaliers, and for a team that's 45-4 right now, what bites my tits is that I'm 0-3 against the Cavaliers.

A large part of me hopes that I miss them in the playoffs. Because even with my lineup (a created player at PG and C, OJ Mayo at SG, Ron Artest at SF, and Chris Bosh at PF, with Ron Stuckey, Danilo Gallinari, PJ Brown and Bonzi Wells getting quality minutes), I'm having MAJOR problems with two players, and I don't know if I'd be able to win a 7 game series.

* The Plethora of RPGs I own - So my PSP is giving me shit, so playing Brave Story is out until I figure out what's wrong. My DS games are still packed, so no playing Dragon Quest IV until that's taken care of. So I've got other RPGs I could play, but I'm wondering which one I should bother with...

- Grandia
- Grandia II (Dreamcast)
- Fable II
- Aveyon (Gametap)
- Chrono Trigger (actual SNES version, not the DS version, which I'm going to wait on a review for)
- Actually making an effort to beat Phantasy Star III and IV (lost saves for both cartridge versions)

There's so many things I could be doing game-wise. I can't wait to break these out!

* I'm thinking of a UTS for the way retailers and publishers are about to go to war over used stock, while the one bit of collateral damage is ignored: US.

You mean the crab in the lighthouse?

It made me curse that game so many times for forcing me to master that magnetic glyph thing.

Yeah, THAT motherfucker. All it takes is one stupid mistake, or to be grazed by that bottom claw (which happens a lot), to put you in a perilous position. And of course, healing items are a fucking rarity. :(

Didn't Alex say that was the hardest Boss in his review?

I'm stuck there too and my siblings have the DS so I'm not getting a shot at that bastard for a few days.

It is probably the hardest boss, indeed (although I had a harder time with the centaur boss, I believe) - and if I recall correctly, it's pretty much the only one with a modified battleground and an alternate beating method .

At least his attack pattern is quite simple and previsible.

or even Football Manage-- Sorry, WORLDWIDE SOCCER MANAGER '09.

I want to get Footyman 09 but stores here are late for some reason and I need to review it. :(

Well, I guess the strawberry demo is deep enough for a review.

because someone's jabbering me on AIM every .4 seconds and they HAVE to talk to me about SOMETHING ridiculous

Which is why I'm posting this here.

Have you moved yet? I really need to send you that DSTT. :(

GRANDIA II, OBVIOUSLY

I kind of want to replay it, but I swore to myself I'd finish Innocent Sin before Persona 4 comes out.

I rented NBA 2K9 and quickly became addicted. It's gone on my XMas list. The thing I love about it is that you really are forced to play a balanced game. I was playing with the Mavs and started the season 0-4 while Dirk was averaging 52 ppg. But once I started spreading the ball around and really attacking the basket I rattled off a 9-game winning streak. Although it did piss me off with the Player of the Month award. I mean, Dirk was Player of the Week every week in November but they picked Chris Paul as the West Player of the Month. I still can't figure that one out.

I learned that lesson quick, but I also like to spread the ball around a lot by nature. My created players are my PG and C, and let's say I don't know restraint. So my long-haired, bearded, 5'9" point guard (guess who) has few problems penetrating the lane, and either laying it in, getting to the line, occasionally getting blocked, or dishing off to either my created centre or another open player.

And EVEN WITH THAT, I started 2-2. It's not like my players were chop suey in the beginning; even before I decided that restraint was for pussies and forced trades, I still had a line-up that consisted of Jamal Crawford at SG, Danilo Gallinari at SF (before his ratings took a spike because of his injury) and David Lee at PF, with Nate Robinson coming off the bench. That's not a lineup that sucks! I won the next four before I started making trades (let's just say that my starting lineup went from those guys to Kevin Martin at SG, who became OJ Mayo because I hate Martin's shot, and Ron Ron came soon after), but the game has this infuriating way of basically just going "fuck you, you're not winning", and start bombing threes. That's why I have issues with Cleveland.

One thing I've noticed: a point guard with good passing is NECESSITY. Most guys in this game - good players - are going to live and die on cuts underneath, and even an above average passer (like Chris Duhon) is going to become a vending machine if he doesn't play it right.

I'll admit: I laughed when you mentioned the Cavaliers. I have a bunch of friends from Cleveland here at college who go apeshit over any of Cleveland's sports (be it the Indians, Browns, or Cavs). So, seeing that line made me laugh quite a bit.

As for the RPGs... Well, you already know which one I'd say, given my icon for the comment. Funnily enough, I actually started a playthrough of it a month or so ago, but I only got up to Raul Hills before setting it aside for a little bit. Since I'm taking my DC home over Thanksgiving and not bringing it back to college, I probably won't pick up again until Christmastime. (Maybe I'll finally pick up Grandia Xtreme again once I finish this run through of Chrono Cross. And, speaking of the Chrono series...)

Though, after seeing some of the bonus content for CTDS, it's slightly piqued my interest in it. I don't really like paying full price for a game that I've beaten on its original console, but the new additions (especially the secret boss) have made me think about picking it up once it drops in price a little bit.

As for the UTS column, I really don't understand why the publishers are getting so uptight. Yes, it's all about money to them, and used stores like GameStop are diminishing that money, but it's not like things like this didn't exist prior to GameStop. It just didn't go on in the mainstream area. If people wanted to get rid of stuff, they sold stuff to their friends or bartered games with friends, or (more likely) sold them at yard/garage sales. It's the same concept, just non-corporate.

I can't really concur with what the publishers are thinking. I don't see any EULA or documentation along those lines that says the product isn't ours once we've bought it. As such, I don't see how the industry could clamor about getting stiffed when we own the game. Can furniture companies whine and complain when someone sells off old furniture because they're moving across country? Nope, I don't think so. The same should apply to the game industry. I think this is just going to become another case like the RIAA and the music industry. The publishers are just going to end up getting shat all over if they try to do sneaky shit to the gamers. Think the reaction to Spore's DRM was bad? I bet this will be even worse.

Original Grandia, 'Bus. *sage nod* It's a welcome break from what JRPGs have become as of late (IMO).

And I've heard that Ecclesia is hard, but, after COTM, I'm wondering how it could possibly be harder than that.
