Strike one, Sega

OK, so I'm a consumer whore and bought the Ultimate Genesis Collection today.

I then learned that in order to unlock the original Phantasy Star, I would have to beat the first stage of Sonic 2.

"OK, what's the prob--"

With two players.

I don't HAVE two players. I have one epileptic mother who Sonic games brings to the brink of seizure.

That's bullshit.

Do what I always used to do: play with a controller in each hand.

Seriously, does the second player even have to do anything?

Turn on the second player, and don't even touch it. It's not like Tails actually uses up your lives or rings or anything.

^ What he said. Just kill the furry fucker. You don't actually need him, though he is kinda useful when you want furball fodder to kill off an enemy far off, or if you want to get to high places.

Tails in Sonic 2 wasn't useful for getting to high places, since he couldn't manually fly.

Are you sure? I seem to definitely recall using a second controller to have him fly sonic around. It's entirely possible I'm thinking of when I did that in Sonic 3, but I'm pretty sure I did that in 2 as well.

Certain of it. I actually dug Sonic 2 out when this post went up so I could make sure before I said something wrong, and I'm testing it right now.

Wow. Man My memory is getting bad.

This is another one on XBLA, right?

No, this is the Genesis collection that came out today.

Other issues include some sound emulation issues, and an inability (from what I can see) to link up Sonic and Knuckles with the past Sonic games; that's something Sonic Jam supported, on the SATURN.

I'm a little baffled by the sound thing. They had a similar problem in the Sega Smash Pack on Dreamcast, and it's weird that they haven't fixed it. Then again, emulation of the Sega Genesis sound chip has always been really, really spotty, at best.

It's not as bad as it was on the Sega Smash Pack, which was absolutely embarrassing. It's little things; things sound tinnier on this than they would on a Genesis. It's to the point where I was thinking it could POSSIBLY be my TV's speakers (not great), and that it could change when I get my new TV next week, but I doubt it.

It's little things that sound wrong, like they're off tune. But it's not like the Smash Pack which had half the collection wrong.
Feb. 14th, 2009 10:38 pm (UTC)
It's not that they're off-tune, it's that they're emulated differently. The YM2612/SN76489 chips are weird.

So you're just saying it might not be really possible to get it tune-perfect? That's believable, Sega hardware's been a bitch for a long time.
Feb. 17th, 2009 10:21 pm (UTC)
s'always *possible*. Just not *practical*.

In recent memory, I can't think of any compilation pack (or unlockable) that has been able to link Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 2 or Sonic 3, despite the required titles both being on the disc. It's possible that there has been, but I generally don't pay attention to those things anyway, as I have S&K, STH2, and STH3 in cartridge form at my house. (By recent, I'm saying Dreamcast/PS2/GC/Xbox generation and newer.)

I think there was a modern collection that had the ability to link Sonic and Knuckles - I might have it for the Gamecube - but I can 100% confirm that Sonic Jam for the Saturn allowed connectivity. That was the first Sonic compilation; notably, it and the Smash Pack for Dreamcast were the only ones released before Sega was picked up by Sammy. Now, I could probably play Sonic the Hedgehog on a condom.

The Gamecube one can, I bought it for my brother.

And don't underestimate the Genesis. The thing had OVER 9000 hardware functions. Emulating that in software on something new is not easy.
