What the FUCK happened, Falcom!?

Instead of just spewing my thoughts again, I'll C+P the convo thread so far; it's basically Ai and I.

Me (under the title "Forgive my fanboy wail": THEY FUCKING RUINED YS

Ai: A post like this requires details - what'd they do to it? I was thinking of putting in some trade-ins for this too... :'(

Me: You know what's sad? I still will. Because it's better than reviewing the ROM, which I'm sure will have Alex castrating me.

OK. In old Ys games - specifically, every version of Ys I + II ever made, even the PC remakes - you fought battles by running into enemies. Hit them on an angle, good; hit them on the front, bad. When running to Midea, you fight like this because you don't have a weapon (like the PC version, not the TCD version).

As soon as you get a weapon? You initiate with an attack button. You have to initiate with (in normal mode) the B button. Now, unlike the old games, attacking from the head doesn't matter; you just swing. And when you swing, you can just run into the enemy continuously until he's dead; there's really no skill to combat, it's just a matter of getting an attack, and then ramming him. Oh, and you can do this because there's knockback now for both people; you used to be able to run through the enemy.

This turns combat into a grinding chore with no skill required. If they were going to turn this into an ARPG, they should have went the way of Ark of Naphtism, or Felghana. The way it is, I'm having a MUCH easier time on the DS, in Normal mode, than I am on the PC in Easy mode. It's no longer even a remotely challenging game.

It's obvious they took some cues from the PC version; a lot of the images are directly from cut scenes in the game, and theri still CG images are the same, with a reduced resolution. And the music is technically the same (though those differences between the DS and PC game are much more noticeable due to the hardware). Personally, I think they should have gone all the way and basically remade the PC remake for the DS. As it is, this is an Ys game that doesn't play much like the Ys I know. It went half-way between old and new school, and while it's technically more "accessible" than the TCD version and the other older games, it's not nearly accessible enough to bring in a new audience. They're aiming for a narrow niche - people that grew up on Ys - and the changes they made are going to make their heads explode.

In short: The new Ys SUCKS. Stick to the PC game, or emulate the Turbo CD game.

Also, fuck the Scout update. I can honestly say it's about ruined my enjoyment for TF2. No, it's not fun playing against eight scouts per team, all of whom are aiming baseballs at your head from miles away. The new maps (for the most part) suck (fuck Egypt). The Scout is broken - repeat, BROKEN - and it's not really possible for me to get the Scout achievements because they either 1) require a LOT of time put in (1,000 double jumps?), or require unlockable items. The ones I can get are so outrageous that it requires an achievement server and a lot of people playing along... people don't really play along in achievement servers. You can have eight people working together for achievements, and one faggot coming in just to kill everyone for kicks. It's about ruined the game because there's no balance anymore; everyone's a scout, and everyone's overpowered... except heavies and snipers.

Actually, I've been fucking scouts up as a heavy on 2fort. They abuse the Sandman so much you can easily see it coming and sidestep from miles away.

Now that I've played a bit more, the Sandman is fucking annoying in crowded areas. >:[

Not only that, but I'm noticing a lot of scouts hiding behind cover, coming out, bonking you with the Sandman, and at that point you're a sitting duck. Scouts and pyros together are now a VERY dangerous combination.

Personally? I hope they make Natascha more powerful in response, and slow these enemies down more. I can never get enough pull with Natascha to really slow them down.

That involves de-revolving the gun, stepping aside, and starting it again. So even if the Sandman misses, he's still got a free shot, usually with the fucking Force-A-Nature. That thing even takes out heavies in a few shots. Try playing Arena against a team with 80% scouts using those two weapons.

The Heavy nerfs are also not appreciated.

It is unfortunate that Legacy Of Ys has this failing, but, since I never had access to the originals, it is a failing that I barely notice.

Seriously, man, I'm just happy that I'm able to (legitimately) play the first two games after wanting to play them for the past twenty goddamn years.

Still, it would've been nice if they'd been a little more accurate, I suppose.

When I review this game, I'm going to recommend the $8 VC version.
