Phone shopping

So with my phone upgrade that I get with my AT+T plan, I have the option of using that to offset some of the cost of purchasing a new smartphone, with all the cool shit like a QWERTY keyboard, 3G network, etc.

Opinions? Thoughts? Keep in mind that while I'm very, very good with computers, I'm not too knowledgeable with all the "innovations" that have come about with phones recently. In short, dedicated PDAs came and went faster than we could blink, and I don't want to be stuck with the next fad.

Also keep in mind that I have AT+T, so the iPhone IS an option, though I think a non-zealot would have to blow me away for me to enter into ANY contract involving an Apple product.

Well, a smartphone will make it easier to check your email from various locations! :P!

My mum has an iPhone. I don't like iPods and Apple's near-monopoly on MP3 players. But I have to grudgingly admit that it's really an entertaining and rather useful device. I wouldn't buy a Blackberry Stone, or Bold, or whatever (not that ATT sells them) if I was going to buy any kind of PDA or Computer-like phone.

I can't comment on the iPhone but I'm very, very happy with my Samsung Propel. I believe it can be gotten cheaply with an upgrade. Full QWERTY keyboard, email compatibility (though not with Gmail... only the major providers?), nice smooth interface, though deleting messages when you've got a lot is a bitch. I usually delete before I hit 40 or so in each 'box. Nice reception, it seems, and pretty convenient design. It's a slider, btw, so your keypad is auto-locked, keeping it from making accidental calls. I guess it's a bit big for a standard cell, but I don't mind it that much ^^'

Also, nice sized screen and support for an SD card. A good bit of storage if you include that, making it possible to use it as a music player (does anyone actually do this...? idk).

/fangirls the phone (:

When you say it doesn't support email via gmail, how? Via the browser? Or via SMTP? I need to be able to access GMail, as all three of my main email accounts - superbusnet.com, grandbell.net and my GMail account - use GMail's servers. If it doesn't support standard SMTP like that - GMail's servers aren't set up that confusingly - that's a deal breaker.

Actually, I'm not sure about the browser/SMTP -- I haven't used that at all due to not having internet on the phone, and I'm no familiar with that at all. I just know I was dicking around with it one day and did check out the list of email providers and Gmail wasn't listed.

Here's the site, though. Maybe it can explain better than I do, because all I use a phone for is talking and texting... ^^' Sorry!

Or wait... The AT&T site does say that it has a browser.
