Writer's Block: Ripped from the Headlines

What news story have you heard or read lately that made you really angry? What about one that made you really happy?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090327/ap_on_re_us/teen_child_porn - 14 year old arrested for child pornography. As in, she was the one taking pictures of herself. For her boyfriend.

This drives me nuts. This is some dipshit DA who's decided "OK, you kids want to do these zany things with your phone-thingies, and your MyArea websites? Well, here, I'm going to put you in jail, little girl! That'll learn 'ya, sitting in a juvenile detention centre with real problem kids!". Why is this DA trying to raise this girl?

Don't get me wrong. This girl has issues. And she's retarded putting her shit on MySpace. Furthermore, with the way things are today, you never know if a classmate could have seen those pictures, had them in cache, and ended up going to jail on some bullshit sting or what have you (I got linked to something on 7Chan recently, went one thread down from that, and practically had to wipe my drive afterwards; if it wasn't CP, it was close). But enough of this bullshit. Even the woman who spearheaded Megan's Law says what should be common sense: this isn't something where she has to register as a sex offender, she should be put into counselling with her parents.

I'm sorry, but after the story of the PA judge who was sending kids to Juvenile Detention as a part of a side business - literally ruining lives because of it - I don't have a choice but to be just a little bit sceptical as to why we've lost our common fucking sense.

*sad chuckle*

Happened to a few kids at my stepdaughters' school, too, but I think all they got was a long suspension and a possible stint in juvy.

Juvy shouldn't be on the table! These kids don't need fucking Juvy to get them to stop putting their pictures up online! That's killing a mosquito with a nuke, and makes me seriously question the motivations of anyone who would even broach the Juvy topic. That's borderline fascism. What's next, force them to go to church?

I agree completely. ~_~ Sending them to jail isn't going to help anything, and instead just gives them a record.

I definitely second that. This is utterly ridiculous :/

Sorry to hear about you having to wipe your hard drive btw. Thats pretty shitty.

Fucking ridiculous. As early as kids are being sexualized (and the fact that they have hormones) and they're getting their panties in a twist over this? Yeah, it's bad, and the girl should be put through some counseling (and maybe have a phone that doesn't have a camera. What a novel concept!), but child porn? For having pictures of herself? Better remove every mirror from her home, she might see herself naked and molest herself. And then we'd have to put her in jail for statutory rape. Of herself. God save my parents with their bathtime pictures of baby me.

These laws were in place to keep kids safe from adults who would try to exploit them. This is just too far.

God save my parents with their bathtime pictures of baby me.

The number of people brought up on charges for stuff like this is discomforting. :/

Wait, you're serious?
Mar. 29th, 2009 11:08 pm (UTC)
Dead serious.

Okay, it's sad that I was joking there and apparently the legal system isn't.
Mar. 29th, 2009 05:48 pm (UTC)

What is wrong with people?
Mar. 29th, 2009 11:56 pm (UTC)
It's sad how a law intended to protect kids from predators has been taken to these extremes. Because a teenager with naked pictures of herself (or even teens *gasp* looking at other naked teens their age) is clearly a pedophile...yeah, okay. While they're wasting time on this, a real pedophile could be flying right under their radar. But no, that makes too much sense.
