We're catching up with our finances, which means I had some spending money.

Time to hit EB and Barnes and Noble for some long-awaited coolness! It's once again time for the GET! Awards!

* Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Konami, 2008, $20) GET! I... miss Pro Evolution. Even if the series has been kinda pants on the next-gen systems, I miss it. I just prefer the GAME over FIFA, even if FIFA is a superior product at this point. And for $20, it's doable.

* My Japanese Coach (Ubisoft, 2008, $30) GET! Easy choice, and I should have gotten this awhile ago. My lunches just got much better.

* Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume (Square-Enix, 2009, $40) GET! I was wondering why this was running $40... then I looked at the label. Ah! That's why. Then again, it's basically Tactics Ogre with a better story environment (the GBA version was one of the most underrated titles of the GBA era). Alex didn't care for the story as much, but he absolutely adored the gameplay.

* The Yankees Years (Joe Torre + Tom Verducci, $17) GET! It wasn't the "controversial" stuff that got me to spend on this 40% discounted book (A-Rod's a pussy! Film at 11!), it was the part where Verducci wrote about the drug culture, and the noise that was made by certain players that was drowned out. It's Exhibit 649 in my thesis presentation "Why Bud Selig Should Be In Jail".

* Rurouni Kenshin, Vol. 1-3 (Nobuhiro Watsuki, $19) GET! This was my impulse purchase of the day, and I think I'll enjoy this one more than I have Dragonball so far. So far, it's very good. I figure this purchase will make Samu happy.

*Suicide Girls: Beauty Redefined (Suicide Girls, $32) GET! This is like a huge Playboy spread for Generation X. See, I've fallen away from most celebrity pretty, because it's all fake; fake hair, fake boobs, Botox, nips and tucks, and the occasional shaving of your head in a barbershop.

I like the Suicide Girls because I like the belief that beauty isn't what Hollywood says it is. Big breasts, small breasts, ultra-skinny, big-boned, they're all in here, and they're all represented.

I don't like "hot" pretty women. I like to look at ALL women. And if that makes me a pervert, so be it, but I'm not going to hide my sexual nature for anyone, fuck what society says.

I know one of the Suicide Girls. Won't say which one, but besides the tats and the weird sexual fetishes, she's one of the sweetest people I know.

After awhile, tats and weird fetishes don't seem weird.

Blood and urine and knives will always be "weird" in my book, but it still stands she's an incredibly sweet and thoughtful person (which isn't what you'd expect when looking at her.)

You sound like a (fellow) AFF-able, 'Bus. Which is odd, but also strangely appropriate.

If you don't enjoy Ruroken I DON'T KNOW YOU ANYMORE, okay.

I LOVE IT so far! One of the best starting manga I've ever read.

Ruroken wasn't my first shounen manga love, and it wasn't my favorite when I was younger, but in the past year or so I reread a lot of my old favorites from start to finish and it's the one where I think my love for it has...aged the best, I guess? I probably have more appreciation for it now than for just about any other manga I've read, and that's saying something.

it sounds incredibly geeky and lame to say it but I really just wish I could be such an amazing and forgiving person as Kenshin is.

I dated several of the original Suicide Girls before it actually launched when i lived in Portland.

Tactics Ogre: The Knight Of Lodis (GBA) is underrated, and I ought to give it a full run in due time. The new Valkyrie Profile, meanwhile, can wait for the bargain bin. I am not paying $40 for a DS game.

Believe it or not, my enjoyment of Rurouni Kenshin is limited. The main character has the same problem as Goku (DBZ); after a while, the series just becomes a bunch of secondary characters standing around ooo-ing and aaa-ing at the main character as he busts out yet another move he revealed to no one before that key moment. (I'm pretty much quoting it, too; there's lots of "Aaa, Kenshin!" and "The secret move he revealed to no one before now!") This is a very pronounced problem in the anime, but the manga is substantially better, if still rather slow-paced.

I dig the Suicide Girls, too, but you and I agree on one thing in our old age: Women, in general, are fun to ogle, and the Hollywood ideal has no real currency.

I have your GBA cart of Tactics Ogre, and I had to blow into it (and the GBA slot in my DS) to get it to work. XD; Though you have a suspended game on it - should I play it to a point where I can make a regular save, or do you not care?

Heh, I've been chipping away at My Chinese Coach, so My Japanese Coach would probably be my next step. XD

Also, Ruronin Kenshin is among my favorite shonen series alongside Flame of Rekka. 8D

Oh, wipe the cart. If I want to start a new game of that, I have the ROM.

Flame of Rekka? I have to check that out, if they have it... maybe it's on Mangafox.

Roger that that saves me room on my Supercard~ 8D Also, your name on it is Puck. :P

I know it's on Onemanga here, and I did also see it on Mangafox - enjoy (and oops, "Recca", not "Rekka" - lolme). The art gets better further in, and it covers much more than the anime did.

Speaking of Mangafox, I did check out Maka-maka, and it's actually pretty good (and the women are drawn more in proportion)...shame there's not more like it. :(

XD! Yeah, my nickname was Puck before it was Bus. I didn't start taking Bus on for everything until my last year or so in the Navy.

Is it me, or is "the anime inferior to the manga" a common theme for most of these? With the exception of Dragonball, that seems to be the case more often than not.

Maka-Maka is awesome. I like realism; I don't like this chibi, super-deformed, are-they-honestly-19 shit that I see too many times. I do wish there were more like it, but let's face it: I got that link from 4chan, in /u/, and half the comments were that it sucked. I guess most of these people haven't been laid, because I love it because it IS realistic, even if it's a bit man-hating.
Apr. 5th, 2009 05:08 am (UTC)
I do remember you mentioning that at some point. XD The cart does look it's been through a lot. Retro nickname (and cart) is retro~

Yeah, it does seem like a common theme for some odd reason. It's kind of hard for me to do any comparisons of Dragonball since most of my exposure of that was the dub.

It was a refreshing change from the usual young looking girls, and I dug the slice-of-life plot. And that reaction's along the same lines of boys that are disappointed not every girl looks like a porn star or that sex is not like in porn.

The only anime I know of which is better than it's Manga is Black Lagoon.
