GET Awards: Trade In Edition!

Aileen sent me a message last night letting me know that Gamer Days sales were back at Gamestop, starting yesterday (Sunday). It was a long list of games, some of which were a bit too new to be on sale, but regardless, I went and checked it out, and while the selection wasn't AS good as I wanted, there were a few quality titles for sale.

But alas! I went to Gamestop on Friday! Surely another trip wouldn't be fortuitous, would it?

Uh oh... what's that I hear in the background? I think I hear someone yelling...

*spins around*

I don't even remember what I traded in; most of it was stuff I didn't care about (including a legit Superbus Seal of Fuck You award winner! Welcome to the club, MLB Front Office Manager!), though a notable game in the collection was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I traded it in because if I play it again, it's going to be on a PC, with real PC controls. Sorry guys... I just can't go back to console controls on FPS games anymore. Valve has ruined that for me. Sorry. :'(

Instead, I have some new loot, in this impromptu version of the GET! Awards: Trade-In Edition!

* Final Fantasy (PSP, $10) GET! This is a good price for this game. It hovered at $30 for so long, I thought it would never go down, and I'm glad I never pulled the trigger on a game I've beaten half to death. Now that it's at $10, that's a more reasonable price for a game they already released on the GBA. Any more than that, and it's not worth it (and FFII still isn't worth anything).

* Metal Slug 7 (NDS, $15) GET! This is another game that's good, but was too expensive for too long. $15 for this is a good price point for a game that's not exactly high on replayability.

* Persona 3 FES (PS2, $20) GET! This means that this is the third copy of a Persona 3 game, and the second copy of FES, in our family (counting Aileen). I think I'll just give away my original copy of Persona 3; any takers?

And I did end up getting a new game:

* Phantasy Star Portable (PSP, $40) GET! This is a Lucard Purchase; Alex recommended it very highly, so I grabbed it with the surplus trade-in value. Hopefully, it'll measure up.

I also got a book for Valkyrie Profile.

It should be noted that while there were a few solid titles, the real star of the show is a game I can't play: Valkyrie Chronicles for $30. I WANT THAT GAME. But... I don't have a PS3, and the longer time goes, the less it looks like I'm going to own one. The older 20GB/60GB units are coming up defective the more and more they're sold on the third market (by increasingly shady dealers, it seems), and even the 80GB that they said was in the back 1) doesn't have full emulation, and 2) still runs $449. Considering the fact that they're talking about selling PS2 games downloadable for the PS3, I'm thinking that this is intentional, and not to reduce costs on their monolithic console, either; this is a business decision to force gamers into buying the new games. I can't in good conscience purchase a PS3 at this time... even if I'm really missing one of the greatest games of the decade.

In the meantime, Phantasy Star Portable will suffice.

Shame none of the games I wanted to buy anyway are on sale. Oh well.

I can't help but be amused that almost every single current-gen Sonic game is on there, though.

Oh, and I'd take Persona 3. Can't find the damn thing anywhere.

Also keep in mind any 80gb PS3 that has come out since last August is no longer software backwards-compatible. Sony pulled it from the unit.

That is ... a rather large fail, then.

And your avatar looks suspiciously like Kent (FE7).

It's from a decent Space Opera anime.

FF1 is always a good purchase, IMO, but I still think FF2 is, too. Then again, I believe I am the only fan of that game. ... All the more reason to add it (back) to the 'fic list, IMO.

– I got Metal Slug 7 at $20, and it was worth it, then, too. $15 is a steal. :-) Still a fun series.

Persona 3 FES is one that I will eventually get. I'd take you up on your Persona 3 offer if I didn't already have it.

Phantasy Star Portable. Maybe. Maybe. Eventually. *sigh* White Samurai needs money badly!

And what about Valkyria Chronicles is supposed to be so great? As far as I can tell, it's just your run-of-the-mill JRPG, but all prettied up for the Black Monolith of Money-Sucking Doom ™.

(Oddly enough, I get the Dudley Brothers "Get the tables!" reference, too.)

But they changed Devon to a Reverend for some reason.

Valkyria Chronicles is possibly the farthest you can get froma run of the mill JRPG. And I've never played the game!

VC is done by (formerly) Overworks, the division of Sega behind Skies of Arcadia, etc. That, in and of itself, makes it awesome. When I first heard about VC, I payed no heed to it. That is, until I heard a few people in IRC talking about it, whereby I looked at a single gameplay video and was, frankly, blown away. I'd buy a PS3 just for VC, but that'd be even more of a waste than my 360 was (considering I've played it for all of two hours), at least at this point in time. (Yeah, sure, there's Blu-ray, but I don't care about HD-quality DVDs, considering I get along fine watching non-HD ones on TV.)

Hmm. I have faith in the SOA people, but ... it's PS3. :-( Stuck there with Disgaea 3, which I really want.

Quick comment, as I have class in 5 minutes, but we apparently have the same tastes for the Game Days sale. XD

I just saw the list on Kotaku, and Metal Slug 7, P3:FES, and Valkyria Chronicles were on my list of notables. (Despite the fact that I suck at Metal Slug games, my friend has FES, so I could always borrow it, and I don't own a PS3 to purchase the wonderfulness that is VC. :( )

In another note, I really need to do an obligatory "GET!" post for all of the stuff I've picked up in like, the last 3 months. XD

I'm almost tempted to ask you for that copy, though I can just walk like, 100 feet or so and ask Sam to borrow hers. XD

but it sounds like a really good haul. O.o damn.
