SBNet Users: What the hell?

I've had a lot of traffic to my sites lately, but recently took the fucking cake. There was such a spike in traffic that Dreamhost warned me that there was what they believed to be a DDoS on our account, and had to temporarily (and quickly; my understanding is that this was less than five minutes) take down sites on my account to see what was going on.

It turns out there was a huge spike in traffic on seigane.net - Cammy, that's your site - that made it look like a DDoS. It all seemed to be coming from one American IP that I haven't been able to trace too much yet, according to my logs, but I want to know what's going on before I mandate having to add an .htaccess to that site.

I apologise for any inconvenience to those with SBNet sites, and Cammy, do you have any clue what happened?

There was one alpha tester in the game prototype (you know which) who refreshed something like... 50k+ times (the spike I mentioned on Twitter earlier) over... idk how long, but it was while I was asleep so um in under 12 hours total. I'm guessing that's it - I'd check the access log but lol 500MB.

I suspended the user temporarily earlier today to try and prevent more problems, though. I'm really sorry about that.

Wait a minute. Let me get this right.

This alpha tester - I'm assuming Josh? - refreshed a page 50K times... why? Was this a stress test? What the hell was going on that made this guy refresh 50K times? This was ONE PERSON?
Oct. 22nd, 2009 05:24 am (UTC)
Yes, one person. And uh shiny hunting (the chance of a shiny is 1 in 8,192 if memory serves).

If it's any consolation I yelled at him for it?

... Shiny hunting? You're serious?

Wait a minute, THAT'S what he was talking about with Mewtwo a few days ago!?

JOSHUA! Explanation! NOW!

The Mewtwo issue was separate, but it was the game, yeah.

**CRACK*** indeed. (replace the asterisks with the letters that should (un)naturally be there, and it will be kind of like what I said it was like before) (I'm falling asleep OKAY :(? )

You've successfully addicted someone to the point of causing out-of-game repercussions. Grats!

But it's still in alpha IT'S NOT EVEN A PROPER GAME YET. :(

This game is in proper terms "pre-alpha" and has a dedicated following giving its lead programmer (sole programmer) about $1,500 a month (about enough for him to survive on, apparently).

Though, it's a tad ambitious in comparison...

...Looking at how long it's been in development makes me want to cry.

Let me start off by explaining what happened. seigane.net has a game in alpha right now, that I was participating in as an alpha tester. I was told that 3 pokemon would carry over, after the wipe, so I figured I'd get 3 rare ones and work on leveling them up. A few days ago, I caught a Mewtwo, and after that, all legendaries were removed from the game, so I decided to hunt Shinies. As angeling said in a post, the chance is approximately 1 in 8192. I stayed up all night two days ago, and hunted all the shinies I wanted, and got them. However, I reported a bug with shinies, that, when fixed, resulted in all existing shinies to revert to normal pokemon. Because angeling would not replace them, I was forced to hunt them again. I stayed up all night doing this, but that resulted in my account being suspended because of the resulting 500Mb access log. What I was not aware of at the time, was that I had also caused the downtime. I had noticed it, but I assumed it was just a fluke, because performance had not decreased at all, and proceeded on my way, refreshing until I found the pokemon I wanted.

All this said, I'm sincerely sorry for the downtime I caused. I realized that the server was shared, but I did not realize that my refreshing would have THAT large of an effect. Clearly, I was mistaken in this. Obviously, I won't be doing this again, at least until seigane.net has it's own server.

Wait, wait, what?

Because angeling would not replace them, I was forced to hunt them again.

Don't try to blame me for the fact you spent all night refreshing. Other testers lost their shinies too and none of them were "forced" to hunt them again, they sadfaced and moved on.

I didn't mean you forced me to.

I meant, I sadfaced, and my persistance forced me to hunt them again. I don't give up easily. XD

This was, however, a preview of the kind of obsessed user you'll certainly get in the future.

You might want to think about how to deal with them, if you haven't already.
Oct. 22nd, 2009 07:32 pm (UTC)
I most certainly have. I can't really stop anyone from refreshing obsessively once it has its own server, but I have included some measures to make sure their obsession (and potential botting) doesn't strike at the game's balance too much.

Like temp bans?

Good luck, regardless.
Oct. 22nd, 2009 07:54 pm (UTC)
Temp bans for suspiciously fast refreshes is a good idea, though what I have right now are things that limit the number of times certain things can happen per minute.

I'll be watching the logs from when this goes live VERY closely, to see what's going on and if I need to help Cammy invest in a dedicated server.

I went back to this entry to read something, and I saw this.

Yeah, there are going to be people like me. Probably quite a few. You're going to have refreshing out the ass, so your traffic's going to spike like you wouldn't believe.

That said, expect to help her out with a dedi. I told her I'd probably donate like 50 bucks, myself.
