Somewhat GET! Awards

In the vein of the GET! Awards that Fenix so HORRIBLY stole,1, I'm going to talk about the games I've been playing that I have NOT reviewed. If you want to know about games I've reviewed, here you go.

NHL '10 - I still rock this game routinely. I'm entering the 2013-2014 season, with maybe the best team ever put together. It's almost useless listing my team as at this point, the majority of my team is either players that were buried in juniors or in the AHL at the time of the game's release or are game-generated draft picks, but all that a casual NHL fan needs to know is that I have, on one team, Evgeni Malkin (2nd best player in the NHL), Steve Stamkos (maybe the 3rd best skater in the NHL at this point; 93 rating), Jarome Iginla (starting to decline - hard - but still a 91 rated player and still my best RW), Alex Pietrangelo (89 rating and getting better), Brent Seabrook (maybe the NHL's most underrated defenceman currently, and an 87 in my game), and Leland Irving (now an 88 rating - better than Lundqvist - and a top Flames prospect). Add in the forementioned young players like Nikita Filatov (86 rating, still can get better, my starting LW), Blake Wheeler, Kyle Cumiskey and some decent draft picks and savvy signings, and my team - having won three of the four Cups in-game - is the best in the NHL, almost to the point of lapping the field.

Of course, literally as I was typing this, a rough game between the 'Nucks and Zombie Whalers gave me a jolt: both Seabrook (fractured jaw in a fight) and Cumiskey (separated shoulder) are going to be out for six weeks. This is where my biggest weakness - AHL depth - bites me in the ass, as my third defensive pairing wasn't even starting in Manitoba; they shouldn't be anywhere near an NHL arena unless they buy a ticket. This also means my third pairing - two rookies - is now my second pairing. On the one hand, it's nice to get them a lot of NHL experience. On the other hand, they might be two of the slowest players in hockey, and Karel Jagr - a first round draft pick from a few years ago - has rocks for hands. He'll develop, but he's not ready for 20 minutes a game. My forwards are still the best in the NHL - my lowest rated player, Garrett Klotz, would be playing on some second lines - but I'm going to end up winning a lot of 6-4 games, even with Irving (Smythe winner) and Dubielwicz in net.

Still, I'm still rocking this game very, very hard, and probably will be until NHL '11.

FIFA '10 - I have to review this now; Fenix called me out in his Pro Evolution '10 review, so now I have to defend FIFA '10 as the better game (because it is).

On the surface, it's no better than FIFA '09. However, the whole game is just... smarter. Reactions to the play, in-air jostling, goalkeepers coming off the line, the whole game plays much better than before. It's still way too physical - you practically have to be sodomized to get a foul - and if the other team decides to park the bus it's still very hard to get a goal, but considering everything, this is the best football game on the market. Sorry, Fenix.

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Frontier - It only took me six months to memorize that name!

I don't know. I mean, I know this isn't a good game. I know that the story kinda sucks. I know the characters are fanservicey to the point of being insulting to my intelligence. And it's not very hard. Not to mention the Don Knots-like cameo by KOS-MOS that was meant to placate the Otaku.

But yet, I still play it.

Maybe it's because it's not hard; I have no desire to want to throw a DS across my room, nor do I think at my age that hard equals good. Maybe it's because it doesn't make me think; it's easily the dumbest RPG I've played in a long time. Maybe it's the fact that it caters to every fanboy fantasy, and at least one or two of them hit sweet spots, even if I feel like I need to shower just for saying that (I like Kaguya as a character and as a set of breasts; ironically, Keiji is my favourite character in the game, and he's the equivalent of a straight man).

Or maybe it's the fact that a character's special move literally involves her dancing to disco while a mecha blows the shit out of whatever it is you're aiming at.

It would never, ever, EVER win an award in any just society, but it's good enough to keep me interested. One game that can't say that: The World Ends With You, an infinitely better game that's just this side of pretentious.

Final Fantasy II - After beating the GBA version of FF1, in what can only be described as the easiest RPG experience I've ever had, I decided to give FFII a try, with the caveat that I would play the game the way the designers had in mind; that is, no hitting myself for an hour while enemies looked on at us with quizzical looks on their faces.

The game is surprisingly addictive; you're always gaining something in the form of stats (didn't the GBA rebalance things?), so there's always an incentive to fight and use different skills. However, the balance is fucked; there's a huge gulf in rank between certain enemies, where the easy ones are too easy and the hard ones are holy-fucking-shit hard. Even worse, since high agility is needed to flee, the harder enemies usually can't be escaped; you go too far on the map, you WILL get wiped; hope you saved. Also, it's possible in some circumstances to get weapons that you're not supposed to get until later in the games; right now, I have Maria with a flame bow which is immensely stronger than anything else I have, except maybe my Mage Staff.

Also, stat boosts are weird. I have Maria wasting magic points because somehow, she doesn't have as much MP as the other two main characters; it doesn't seem to work well, she never gains MP. Since she also doesn't have as much HP, strength, or even Magic power as most anyone (GUY has the highest magic rating!), that makes her all but useless.

It's a fun game to play, but definitely not the best Final Fantasy game ever; it's among the worst, come to think of it, even considering it's strengths (a good story, especially for 1988, and a solid battle system)

1 - Since I stole the idea from Samuraiter, that can be forgiven.
