I'm sure that if your article had been posted on a fan message board for the Tales series, it'd get slammed just as bad. Hell, I remember the hugely negative reaction to the review for Radiant Dawn that IGN did from the collective FE fanbase (and, while your column was no where near as bad as that review, you can see the connection). Fans will always be overprotective of whatever series they're devoted to. (That doesn't mean that they're correct in any bashing that they do, however.)

And, in the case of SRT fans (who, as far as I've seen, will just as easily rail on you for not using the fan romanizations of names, simply because that's what they want them to be named (and not what Atlus localized the few that we do have to be)), their overprotectiveness is more like a zealous rage. (No offense to the sane SRT fans who don't act like that.)

I was extremely disappointed by how poorly SRWG reacted to that article. It may be my current fandom, but it has yet to deliver on anything close to the same level as FE fandom. Much as I enjoy the games themvselves, the people have yet to impress me. (Aside from Chris Kern, but I have known him since Sailor Moon.)

Part of me wants to read the responses. The other part of me knows that I'd facepalm so hard as I read them.

Part of that second part probably revolves around the fact that the SRT fandom doesn't exactly have a lot of options to go to. In fact, prior to you mentioning the place, I hadn't heard of (or found) any place to really talk about the games, at least on the scale of like what FESS was. That, and, while we did have a minority of members who would insist on calling certain characters or classes their fan translated names, it was never as bad as vehemently insisting that other people call characters certain things. Granted, this may just be the slog that trolls YouTube, but they're still a part of the fandom. :/

I've not met too many die-hard fans, mainly just people that have played a few of them, and from those that I have met, I've luckily not come across anything remotely like the others. (Of course, it helps when some of the people are in both fandoms, so... (Perhaps being a part of the FE fandom makes on more mature after time passes?))

Don't forget that I'm one of those "fan translated" people. XD

Then again, I couldn't fault anyone for calling someone something different; it was always friendly banter on the Tate/Thito front, and even with Sheeda/Caeda, it was a personal thing. These people are basically saying "we're big fans, so we matter more". Um... no, you don't. But in a community that bans as easily as SRW-G, that kind of mentality works. When the choices are either subscribe to groupthink or be removed, it's easy for people to do the former. Especially in a fandom as small as SRW-G.

The responses were awesome. They basically took one part of what I wrote, whatever they didn't like, ran with it, and ignored the other thousand plus words I wrote. The admin even made fun of my background in IT (which would show it's relevance if he's read my past work; he thinks I'm trying to say I can talk about SRW because I worked in IT, but their admin is tempramental to begin with, so meh). I laughed my ass off.

In short: meaningless responses from people unqualified to talk to me about it.

The tribalism can be explained by what Glenn says: There is no other place for SRW fans to go, and it does not help that the forum cobbles together a bunch of people from all over the world. Different languages, different mentalities, and a more autocratic management combine to create a community that is long-lasting and relatively peaceful (due to the enforced inability to argue anything at length, perhaps), but that also lacks the creative forces that FESS had. It creates a sort of tunnel vision, which you describe here.

Semi-related: To date, there are still no good SRW 'ficcers. In fact, there are almost no 'ficcers at all. The fandom does not promote any type of contribution aside from translations, scans, etc. IMO, these limitations are what keep the fandom as small as it is. That, and the only games released in English are the games that lack any anime licenses (i.e. about 10% of all the SRW games that exist).

Adding to that last fact, it's not as if a huge population KNOWS about the series, either. The three that were localized in NA never got much, if any, advertising. I was lucky enough to find out about them from some of the guys on FESS back when the various IRC channels (and their offshoots) existed and even luckier to find copies of both OG1 and OG2 at my local GameStop within the past year. It's entirely possible that I'd have never heard about the series at all, which I'd say represents a fair share of the community that might be interested in it.

It's not necessarily that there weren't the people that abide by fan translations, as I'm one of them too (Sheeda, the entire cast of FE4 since there are at least two names for about each character, etc.). It's just that we don't ram our own opinions down anyone else's throats about it. Take Celice or Ice Dragon for example, since they were largely two of the prime candidates that represent this. You'd consistently see them referring to the characters in whatever way they knew them as, but it wasn't as if for every time you said Altenna, they'd correct you, saying, "No, it's Alteena."

This is unlike some of the examples I've seen in the SRT fandom. I swear, if you run across someone that is even just a small proponent of saying Zengar instead of his translated name, Sanger, you won't hear the end of it. Again, though, this may just be a bad case of people that I've seen.

*looks at the ups and downs of FE fandom over the years*

I do not think the fandom itself promotes maturity, seeing as to how it is a Nintendo fandom full of the same problems that all Nintendo fandoms carry (i.e. stat monkeys, Nintendo fanboys, too many teenagers, etc.). I think, instead, that the luck of the draw gave us, overall, a better class of fan – that is, the right combination of people in the right place at the right time. We still have a great combination of talent and maturity, though most of it is here on LJ, rather than at any forum, since FESS is closed.

I can see the difference.

Both sides have smart people that are involved, know different languages, and are dedicated.

But SRWG insulates everyone. There's an approved way of doing things, and if it's not approved of by the people in charge, it won't be done. Add to that the exclusionary nature (constantly killing sign-ups, blocking entire ISPs and saying "you're fucked" to anyone caught in the dragnet, Daya's obscene arrogance, you practically need to be referred to get in), and it's limited by it's own design.

On the other hand, I took our best people and gave them rope. I was an asshole, but one with a pretty long fuse and a desire to work with them. I also left the regular members alone for the most part, unless it became a personal issue. Furthermore, I never banned anyone over a personal issue, something others forget. That's why FESS was able to grow the most; Eaichu and I took the ingredients that were in the pot (which ARE sort-of there for SRW-G) and made a hell of a stew.

As for your statement..

"I do not think the fandom itself promotes maturity"

Fixed. :D

I'd joke about you being a smartass if that statement weren't true. :-P
